IS YOUR occupation in high demand in Australia?

16/11/2018

Is your occupation in high demand in Australia?

The Australian Department of Jobs and Small Business researches the type of skills shortages that exist in the Australian labour market. This research is then used to inform the skilled migration program for the next financial year.

During the 2017-18 financial year 190,000 visas were allocated for Skilled, Family and Special Eligibility visa.  This has remained unchanged for the 2018-19 financial year.

In the 2018-19 year there will be:

  • 128,550 Skilled visa places offered,
  • 57,400 Family visas offered, and
  • 565 available places for the Special Eligibility group of visas

Skilled Visa applicants fill 128,550 or 68.9% of all available places in the following categories:

  • Employer sponsored (48,250 places available)
  • Skilled independent (43,990 places available)
  • State and Territory Regional Sponsored (28,850 places available)
  • Business Innovation (7,260 places available)
  • Distinguished Talent (200 places available)

The majority of places are allocated to Employer sponsored visas.

If you don’t have an eligible employer you may be eligible for the
Skilled Independent visa. The advantage of the Skilled independent category is that you don’t need to be sponsored. You can also choose where you want to live and work.

How do you assess your eligibility for the Skilled independent visa- Step by Step?

  • Age limit

In order to be eligible for a Skilled independent visa you must be under 45 years.

  • Have a suitable skills assessment

Your occupation must be identified as high demand. Only a limited number of places are available to some high demand occupations based on the occupation ceilings set by the department.
Once you identify that your occupation is in high demand, look at the ANZSCO Standard of Classification of Occupations to see what Australian qualifications and tasks you must meet to qualify for that occupation.

You then need to have your skills assessed by the appropriate Australian authority.

  • English language ability

You must have competent English as a bare minimum but the greater your English language ability the more points you score (see below).

  • Points test

You must also score a minimum of 65 points on the Points test. The higher your score the better your chances. Recently only people with scores of 70 have been receiving invitations.

  • How do you know if 65 points is enough?

It depends on a number of factors such as how many others have applied in your occupation and how your points score compares to theirs. The greater the competition, the higher your score will need to be.

For example, Accountants, Auditors and Company Secretaries needed at least 80 points to receive an invitation to apply in the latest invitation round released on 11 September 2018.

As of 11 September 2018, only 45 Management Consultants out of the allocated 3,894 places had been filled for the 2018-19 year.

  • Submit an Expression of Interest

You then  submit an Expression of Interest to the department. Based on the number of places still available and the standard of the other applicants in your occupation, you may be invited to apply for a Skilled independent visa.
