New Zealand citizens
There are special visa options available to New Zealand citizens. On arrival in Australia, since 26 February 2001, you will automatically be granted special category visa (SCV) which allows you to live and work in Australia. It doesn’t, however, offer you permanent residence or government benefits.
Another consideration applicable to New Zealand citizens is if you were present in Australia on 26 February 2001 (or 1 of the two years prior to) then you are considered an eligible New Zealand citizen. This means you are essentially equivalent to an Australian permanent residency.
New Zealand citizens who were in Australia at some point prior to 1 September 1994 you may be able to obtain a subclass 155 Resident Return visa. This offers a pathway to possible Australian citizenship for both you and your family members.
