How do I become a permanent resident of Australia?

The three most common pathways to permanent residence (PR) in Australia are:

• a family-stream permanent visa
• a work-stream permanent visa
• business or investor-stream permanent visa

 
Family stream PR visas
These are for:

• partners, children, parents or dependent relatives of an Australian citizen, permanent resident of Australia
• children being adopted or in the process of being adopted outside of Australia
• carers who need to move to Australia to provide long-term care for an
• approved relative

 
Work stream permanent residence visas
These are for workers who:

• have an Australian employer sponsoring them to work in Australia or
• have skills that Australia values 

 
Business or investment stream permanent residence visas
These are for business people or investors who:

• have a certain temporary business or investor visas or
• have a business and are not sponsored or
• want to establish a new or develop an existing business in Australia or
• are sponsored by a state or territory or
• have held a designated investment of AUD750,000 for 4 years and are sponsored by a state or territory or
• have held a designated investment of AUD1.5million for 4 years
