Family and Partner Visas in the 2025/2026 financial year: What’s Changing and What You Need to Know

23/9/2025

The 2025 migration reforms in Australia have mostly focused on skilled migration and student pathways, but Family and Partner Visas have not been left untouched. If you're planning to sponsor a partner, parent, or other family member, it's important to understand the current policy settings, processing trends, and what’s on the horizon.
1. Partner Visa Program Remains Uncapped – But Heavily Scrutinised Unlike skilled and employer-sponsored visas, Partner visas remain uncapped, meaning there's no formal limit on how many can be granted each year. However, this doesn’t mean easier approvals — if anything, the process has become more rigorous:
  • Genuine relationship evidence requirements are being scrutinised more closely.
  • Processing times can vary widely depending on the quality of documentation and the applicant’s immigration history.
  • Front-end assessments are taking longer, and decision-ready applications have a clear advantage.
There has been no significant change in eligibility criteria, but migration agents are noticing a trend toward more detailed requests for additional information. Having your documents in order from the outset is crucial.

2. Fee Increases for Partner Visas From 1 July 2025, visa application charges (VACs) for family visas, including Partner Visas (Subclass 820/801 and Subclass 309/100), have increased again. The current base application charge is over AUD $9,000, with additional charges for dependent applicants.
This makes Partner Visas among the most expensive visa applications in the system. For many families, it reinforces the importance of getting it right the first time, as reapplications or refusals can be financially and emotionally draining.

3. Parent Visa Places Remain Highly Limited The Parent Visa program continues to have a very limited number of places under the capped Migration Program. For 2025–26, the allocation for parent visas has remained low, contributing to processing times that can stretch into 10–30 years for non-contributory parent visas.
For families who can afford it, the Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143/173) remains the faster (but significantly more expensive) option — costing upwards of AUD $45,000–$50,000 per applicant.

4. Resident Return Visas & Family Pathways-There has been renewed attention on former permanent residents who are seeking to return to Australia after long periods away. The Resident Return Visa (Subclass 155/157) remains the main pathway, but the Department is increasingly requiring clear evidence of ties to Australia, including family connections and past contributions.
If you or your family member held PR in the past and never took it up (or let it lapse), it may still be possible to return — but only with a well-prepared application.

Final Thoughts-While the spotlight in 2025 has been on skilled migration, family and partner visas remain critical pathways to Australia, especially for those with deep personal connections here. However, higher fees, stricter documentation standards, and slower processing times mean it’s never been more important to lodge a decision-ready application.
At Origin Visas, we specialise in Partner and Family Visas — and we’ve been through the process ourselves. We understand the emotional weight behind each application and are here to help you get it right the first time.
